AV as a Career

-contributed by Matt Clouser, President, Active Production & Design, Inc.

The Audiovisual field is a fun and rewarding career path, it has shaped my life in ways that I would have never imagined. It is also a very hands on industry that can't be taught adequately through books. The only way to excel within the industry is to get "front line" experience. So how does one even get started in the AV industry? It depends on where you are in your life. If you're very young, most High Schools have theater and television production electives that a young inspiring AV person can get involved in. If you're past high school there are also many Associate's Degree programs available with colleges, like Full Sail and The Art Institute. These are good options for learning about Audio Visual in controlled environments. After College, there is no school or training better than being on the job. Seek out and interview with production companies, hotel AV companies and even look into cruise ships to gain on the job experience. Management skills, being responsible and a good personality go a long way in our industry so make sure you are refining those traits along the way. Audio Visual is a great career with many opportunities for growth, travel and creativity, and there is a real need for talented production professionals. Like any career, keep your eyes on the goal of where you want to go and maintain that focus while seeing every experience, at every level, as a stepping stone to learning more. Your flexibility and desire for growth will go a long way in this industry. We are always looking for good people here at Active as we feel our staff makes us who we are, if you're interested in partnering with us, contact us today.
